The smoking ban which came into force on the 1st of July is providing a welcome boost for Newcastle upon Tyne based ‘fingerprint entry’ specialist UK Biometrics Ltd, as nightclubs seek a secure way to allow customers out of their venue for a cigarette.
The city centre location of many nightclubs means installing an outdoor smoking area is not an option. Current ticket, swipe card or hand-stamp identification methods are open to abuse since they can be swapped outside the venue, putting owners at risk of allowing under age drinkers or known trouble makers entrance.

3DX-Ray has introduced a new version of its portable and lightweight TPXi x-ray detection unit which is designed specifically for bomb and threat detection. The TPXi-675 is lightweight, fast to deploy, and is ideal for imaging the internal contents of suspect packages that have been left in passenger terminals or other high threat risk areas.
As well as offering the highest image quality of any comparable system it also offers the world’s largest detector area – around 4 times the size of A4 (500 x 400mm). This gives it the ability to image most suspect packages in one go without the danger of having to go back to reposition it. It can be used in either landscape or portrait mode (or any angle in-between) and, as the detector is just 5cm thick it can even squeeze behind packages that are left close to a wall.

The British Retail Consortium (BRC) welcomes indications from Downing Street that the Government will reject proposals which would see convicted shoplifters walk free, no matter how many offences they had committed. Prime Minister Tony Blair is believed to have vetoed proposals from the Ministry of Justice - which is formally created today – to relieve prison overcrowding by severely restricting the use of custodial sentencing for so called ‘low-level’ offences. The BRC believes such a move would leave retailers at the mercy of hard-core re-offenders who view shop-crime as a lifestyle choice.
