2M-pixel panoramic camera delivers higher resolution images and opens up new applications opportunities
Sony Europe’s ISS (Image Sensing Solutions) division has announced the next generation models in its range of 360° panoramic cameras. The latest 2M-pixel versions, the RPU-C2512 desktop mount model and the RPU-C3522 ceiling mount version, offer significant improvements over their predecessors in overall image quality, not just in sheer resolution. The real 360° view delivered by the Sony RPU models takes camera technology to a whole new level with all-round imaging that users can view in real time. The panoramic cameras are shipped as OEM modules aimed at value added manufacturers and integrators. The second-generation Sony RPU-C2512/C3522 models feature many enhancements over their predecessors, which go far beyond the increase in resolution from 1.3 to 2.0 Megapixels. The auto white balance (AWB) has been improved, there is a better electrical shutter speed control, and additional control functions for hue, saturation and brightness have been added. Provision for Visca command protocol control has been added via an optional RS-232 communication board, the RPU-A001, this allows for the RPU camera modules to be easily controlled by software. Furthermore, CCD white dot correction and noise reduction functions provide significant enhancement of picture quality. The Sony RPU cameras feature a unique 360° annular (full-circle) lens system and a 2 Megapixel, 7.5fps CCD sensor to output a ring-shaped image as a composite video signal. Sony RPU users can watch a full, live and undistorted panoramic image without having to combine or ‘stitch’ shots together using complex software, multiple cameras or multiple shots. Proprietary Sony DSP technology and software ensures that the doughnut image is reformed as a perfect panoramic view. The 360° panoramic view covers an area of 38° above the plane of the lens and 17° below (which allows users to see items on the desktop) for the desktop model, and from 0° to 66° for the ceiling mounted model. All Pan, Tilt, and Zoom (PTZ) functions are controlled digitally or via software commands and a simple interface provides outputs of seven unique image sets from the raw 360° annular image, including a brand new rear view mirror mode, uniquely delivered by Sony on the market which is especially useful for automotive applications. Thanks to their compactness, high functionality, host of features and ease of integration, these cameras offer distributors and integrators a highly innovative product with a wide range of target applications. Sony RPU units are already finding their way into remote observation applications such as simultaneous multi-user webcasting and home monitoring through 3G networks. Dual camera security applications are also popular where the panoramic camera maintains an overview perspective whilst a high resolution P/T/Z camera tracks a target and zooms into the area of interest. Other applications include patrol vehicle roof-mounted systems, robotic systems and roundtable view video conferencing. The Sony RPU-C2512 and RPU-C3522 are dual standard video systems, offering NTSC and PAL signals to enable the widest possible product development. The processed image can be directly displayed on a TV monitor. The single module, digital design of the RPU technology results in high reliability of the overall system, and delivers a highly cost-effective, reliable and versatile camera solution. Both models are available now from Sony. Visit www.sonybiz.net/vision for further information.
