Airport Secures Safer Parking Award PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 22 March 2006
Nottingham East Midlands Airport (NEMA) has secured the Park Mark Safer Parking Award for the second year running. NEMA was the first airport in the UK and the first organisation in the Midlands to be given the accreditation in 2004.

Figures for vehicle crime offences at the Castle Donington site have almost halved over the last year. Between April 2004 and March 2005, there were 32 incidents of vehicle crime. Between April 2005 and March 2006, there were 17 incidents of vehicle crime. Vehicle crime offences include theft from a motor vehicle, theft/taking without consent and damage to a motor vehicle.

The Park Mark Award initiative of the Association of Chief Police Officers is backed by the Home Office and Scottish Executive and aimed at reducing crime and the fear of crime. Each parking facility has to undergo a risk assessment conducted by the police to check whether the operator has put in place measures that help to deter criminal activity and anti-social behaviour.

NEMA’s General Manager Retail & Car Parking, Jamie Christon said,
"We’re absolutely delighted to have received this award for the second year running and the figures of vehicle crime have been cut dramatically. Every incident of vehicle crime is treated extremely seriously; however, it proves the Airport’s consistency in its drive towards offering the only safer on-site parking facility. Passengers have the peace of mind that they can leave their cars on-site when they jet off on their holidays."

Between 1 January 2005 and 31 December 2005, over three million vehicles were parked at Nottingham East Midlands Airport. Leicestershire Police reports during that period, only 12 incidents of vehicle crime were recorded. This was the period that the Airport was assessed for the Park Mark Safer Parking Award. These statistics show that customers parking at the Airport have a one in 250,000 chance of being a victim of vehicle crime.

Leicestershire Police Inspector Tony Marson said,
"The safer parking scheme is aimed at reducing crime and the fear of crime in parking facilities. We have been working with the Airport management for a considerable time to deter criminal activity. The Airport has introduced an effective combination of active management procedures and preventative measures, and I would like to congratulate them on obtaining the award."
