IMPORTERS WORK WITH HMRC TO TACKLE ALCOHOL FRAUD PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 23 March 2006

In a significant move to combat alcohol fraud, HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) Chairman David Varney today signed Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) with Trade Associations representing UK spirits importers warehouse keepers.

In a significant move to combat alcohol fraud, HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) Chairman David Varney today signed Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) with Trade Associations representing UK spirits importers warehouse keepers.

The agreement with both the Wine and Spirits Trade association (WSTA) and The Gin and Vodka Association (GVA), whose members are responsible for over 80% of all spirit imports into the UK, will provide a framework for co-operation in tackling alcohol fraud and smuggling into and out of the UK. This initiative will set a formal basis of co-operation which will restrict the opportunities for fraudsters to hide illicit duty suspended movements within legitimate imports.

Today's signing strengthens the ongoing relationship between HMRC and the UK spirits importers and represents a key element of the Government's strategy to tackle alcohol fraud. Importers will work together with HMRC to tackle the problem of alcohol fraud, which deprives the Government of millions of pounds of revenue each year.

Financial Secretary to the Treasury, John Healey MP said:
"Spirits fraud cheats the taxpayer and undermines legitimate businesses who pay the duties due. The industry is uniquely placed to help HMRC stamp out the fraud and stop the criminals who profit from it.

"I warmly welcome the MoUs signed today which confirm the close co-operation of the trade associations in working with HMRC to combat fraud."
