Brighton Marina’s security personnel have become one of the first teams in the country to have completed a demanding new surveillance course.
The ‘CCTV & Public Space Surveillance’ course is reported to be one of the hardest training courses set out by the official industry body, the Security Industry Authority (SIA). This organisation is responsible for regulating the private security industry according to the requirements set out by the government and covers security guards, private detectives and door personnel. The security team at the Marina passed the course with flying colours and are among only a small number of security personnel to do so in the UK. In fact, only 2 other licences have already been granted in the whole of the country (with 28 people qualified to apply for the licence) despite the thousands of CCTV control rooms. The licence will be a legal requirement for security officers by March 2006 but the Marina’s team have stepped up to the challenge early. Colin Tribe, security manager for Brighton Marina, said: “I am very proud to be heading a proactive, positive and professional security outfit. The team here works hard to ensure the safety of visitors and residents in one of the most popular destinations in Brighton. On a busy weekend, we can be dealing with 7,000 visitors and over 3,000 cars in our car parks and it’s a challenge we take very seriously. We’re proud of all the staff here and congratulate them on passing the course.”
All 17 full-time security officers at Brighton Marina have also just successfully received their SIA licences in accordance with the Private Security Industry Act 2001
