The publication of the National Audit Office (NAO) report: 'Ministry of Defence - Assessing and Reporting military Readiness', was welcomed today by Armed Forces Minister, Adam Ingram.
The NAO report examines the way MOD defines, measures and reports how well prepared the Armed Forces are to undertake potential operational challenges they may be asked to face.
The NAO found that MOD has a good system in place which compares well with that of other countries, such as the United States and Australia. The report notes that the system is continuously improving and that it has proven itself over time.
The MOD agrees with the NAO's recommendations which - as the report acknowledges - are already being taken forward.
Armed Forces Minister, Adam Ingram said:
"We very much welcome this report. At a time when our forces are very busy, it is more important than ever to know how ready our excellent Navy, Army and Air Force are for any new tasks that might arise.
"No Armed Forces can be perfectly ready at all times for every contingency, but we must be able to manage effectively the risks to preparing forces for new operations. This report underlines our commitment to achieving this complex but crucial task."
"I am particularly pleased that the report highlights the confidence that military commanders have in the readiness reporting system and that its accuracy has been demonstrated in recent operations. We are working to implement the NAO's recommendations for further improvements."
