(See News section for more details) History of The Corps of Commissionaires The full name of the company is The Corps of Commissionaires Management Ltd. It was founded in 1859 by a benefactor, Captain Edward Walter, who established the organisation to provide gainful employment for ex-servicemen returning from the Crimean War. Captain Walter was of the view that ex-servicemen were being shabbily treated by the government of the day and recognising that these people had much still to offer, provided them with an opportunity to earn a wage and make a useful contribution to society. In 1901, His Majesty King Edward VII consented to head The Corps? list of governors in the office of Chief Life Governor, an honour the reigning monarch has continued ever since. Remaining in management until his death in 1904, Sir Edward saw the number of Commissionaires grow slowly over the years and the company, with the continuing involvement of the Walter family, develop a management structure ? again with ex-servicemen providing the management hierarchy. In 1973 The Corps became a limited company. The Corps Today The Corps currently employs circa 3,500 staff and has an annual turnover in excess of ?50m. Our company structure is unique within our industry in that none of our Board of Directors or Executive Management team has any financial interest in the company. The company has one share held in trust by the Board of Governors. The re-organisation to turn The Corps into a commercial business began in 1984. By 1986 the new Corps was placing 1,000+ applicants a year in jobs. Today, under the direction of its Managing Director, The Corps continues to grow and prosper on commercial principles. The Corps offer a range of security services, currently operating out of the following offices: Belfast, Birmingham, Bracknell, Bristol, Cardiff, Crawley, Fareham, Glasgow, Leeds, London, Manchester, Newbury, Newcastle, Stevenage and Papua New Guinea. Outside the UK, similar organisations were set up for ex-servicemen in the 20th century and looked upon the Corps of Commissionaires as their parent organisation. Today the Corps of Commissionaires still operates across Canada and in the state of Victoria, Australia.
