WORKING AT HEIGHT IS THE BIGGEST CAUSE OF WORKPLACE FATALITIES
The HSE is hosting a safety event targeted at those contracting workers in the building and plant maintenance trades who often work at head height or below.
The event, which is aimed at facilities managers, commercial landlords, estates and building managers and housing associations, will take place at Telford Business Development Centre on Thursday 8 June 2006.
Recent HSE statistics show working at height is the biggest cause of workplace fatalities and that 59% of major injuries suffered by employees due to falling from height were as a result of falling from a height below head height.
HSE principal inspector Harvey Wild said: "Falls from heights below head height cause serious harm. For workers, it could mean a fatal or major injury. Employers and contractors need to consider that falls are expensive and can seriously impact on their business with delays and loss of skilled workers. It is important to remember that workers are still working at height, even if they are working below head height. Falls are preventable if people plan work properly, assess the risks, choose the right equipment and if competent people carry it out. During this event HSE aims to stress these messages to those procuring work to be undertaken at height so that they always choose competent contractors."
